Glarnerland was one of the first regions in Switzerland to be industrialised. Even today, over 40 percent of its roughly 18,000 workers are employed in industry, which is more than in any other canton. Most of these are in:

  • in machine and plant construction,
  • in plastics and electrical engineering, and
  • in food and environmental technology.

But Glarus is more than just industry: the Office for Economic Affairs supports industrial businesses along with trades and services. The third sector is becoming ever more important: by now, over half of all employees work in services, especially in the health industry and retail. Glarner locals find exciting and interesting challenges right in front of their doors and only have to drive a few kilometres to work.
