Work Permit

Switzerland has a dual system for admission of foreign workers. Workers from EU/EFTA member states benefit from the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons.

EU-17/EFTA nationals only require a residence permit, which is also a work permit. A residence permit will only be issued upon establishment of an employment contract or if the requirements for non-workers have been met.

Employees from EU-8 states will continue to require a work permit until 30 April 2011.

Employees from Romania and Bulgaria (EU2) will continue to require a work permit until 31 May 2016. It will be granted if

  • priority for Swiss nationals was observed
  • pay and work conditions have been met.

Only executives, specialists, and skilled workers will be admitted to a limited extent from all other states. In this case the person in question must register with an employment office.
